Darius Simpson and Scout Bostley Spoken Word/Morning Reflection

  1. Interesting role reversal between the young black man and young white woman. I am pondering the statement about the problem with speaking up for someone else is that I am left without a voice (I have to get the exact quote). They said something like if you say you can relate to my gunshot wound by stabbing yourself in the thigh just know those are two different wounds—it doesn’t work. Question: what is the role of advocacy for others for whom you care or have empathy?

How can I bring this to my students to spur critical thinking? Could 6th graders relate? There are two specific boys that I know who could.

How does spoken word create change? By giving voice to a situation or scenario? Do people act and react to this medium? I guess it is like MLK’s "I Have a Dream" speech or Aristotle speaking in the square. Visionaries do spark the imagination, conscience and action of people.
