Day two of 2016 Summer Institute

Today we started with a video from 2Pac Shakur.  We followed with a very interesting conversation and reflection from urban educators. We as urban educators must leave the comforts of our classrooms and visit the neighborhoods of our students. It is our goal to not only be aware of the barriers that our students face, but also provide resources for them to conquer all obstacles in their way.  By doing this we can not only embrace our students, we must also embrace the families and communities in which they come from. "It's Going To Take A Village To Raise A Child".

  1. This was such a powerful reflection and I really appreciate Tupac's realness with the obstacles that people face each day. Our students coming from urban areas, navigate the world in such a way that many of us cannot relate to. During our discussion today, we talked about how our students are adaptable and often grow up fast and "bypass childhood" as Tupac stated in his speech. Our students may begin to act differently, use harsher language, disrespect elders, refuse to engage with classroom norms and possibly worse if nobody takes the time to listen and to help. It is up to educators and school leaders to help our students navigate the world safely in order to reach their goals and new opportunities academically and socially.
