Pokémon Go blog post
Yesterday we saw an interesting reflection on the Pokémon Go phenomenon. Today my good friend Jackie Marsh posted on her digilitly about her research on young children's use of digital media. Excellent analysis at https://digilitey.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/pokemon-go-and-augmented-reality-play/

A very watered down but helpful description of Atwell's Workshop Model
This summer, many of us are focusing on different writing and reading workshop models. Some of us incorporate Lucy Calkins and her model and some of us incorporate Nancie Atwell's model into our classrooms. This is a description from a fellow at the Northern Nevada Writing Project. It may be helpful to some of us that are revamping the curriculum or some of us that are essentially starting from scratch!

Day two of 2016 Summer Institute
Today we started with a video from 2Pac Shakur. We followed with a very interesting conversation and reflection from urban educators. We as urban educators must leave the comforts of our classrooms and visit the neighborhoods of our students. It is our goal to not only be aware of the barriers that our students face, but also provide resources for them to conquer all obstacles in their way. By doing this we can not only embrace our students, we must also embrace the families and communities in which they come from. "It's Going To Take A Village To Raise A Child".

Day one of 2016 Summer Institute
We are off and running for the first day. I shared the reflection this morning. It is a spoken word piece called, "Everybody dies, but not everyone lives." The group was struck by the different perspective this person took. Several key lines stood out, but one came up a lot, "Leap, then build your wings on the way down."
My reflection:
My reflection:
The dream has me. I love this way of looking at life. How do
I make a brand new ending? We only have this one life; what is the path for me?
I feel like I am on that path now that "I" have East, the Market, my research,
etc. Marcus is inches away from graduating. I can still move around okay.
Fighting for justice is my dream and I feel privileged to get to do that as my
job. Not sure justice will happen in my lifetime, but the fight is a good one.
Day by day, relationship by relationship …
